Borneo Bengkel was first conceptualised in 2017 by Catama Borneo and is hosted by HAUS KCH, with support from Amogha Tours.

Follow @BorneoBengkel on Instagram for more updates on the creative residency that precedes this finale event!

The Programme
Ultimately, the ethos behind this residency has always been to create an environment of knowledge- and skill-sharing, void of ego. As the first leg of this journey, the outreach seeks to embody this ethos fervently, as 30 participants will "turun padang" to trade valuable cultural knowledge and skills with the beautifully vivid, charming, and sage cultural practitioners and rural artisans of Kampung Sadir. Our participating residents from Borneo and UK will teach their contemporary artforms in hopes for the villagers to use as a tool for socio-economic benefit, for themselves and for their community. In turn we will learn valuable knowledge on Bidayuh culture that longs to be passed on; ancient weaving techniques and the lay of the land.

The Village
Kampung Sadir is a Bidayuh village situated on the beautiful hillsides of Padawan, nestled between multiple waterfalls. One walk through this village would render one at peace--it is littered with the bounties of nature that nurture and sustain its villagers' way of life. Rattan and bamboo are especially prevalent, with livestock staking claim to sidewalk real estate, and cats and dogs lounging lazily side by side under the sun. While you stop and spy an elderly crafts woman weaving a rattan basket detail, the children will playfully wave at you, enticing a friendly response.

Our Ask
Our experience will last from 6-8 October. Bringing 30 participants to this neck of the woods, however, requires a certain amount of funds: our calculation brings the cost of 3 days and 2 nights of skill-sharing to a total of RM7500. The funds go straight to transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, workshop materials, and an honorarium to our welcoming hosts. The latter is especially important as we believe economic empowerment is important to traditional craft practitioners.

While we, Borneo Bengkel, and Catama Borneo go about our respective ways of searching for funding, we implore the help of the public and are opening this avenue for you to contribute to our cause--in true spirit of the no-ego invitation to collaborate.

With that, we leave it to you to contribute any amount with which you're comfortable. We've collaborating with our guest artists to provide the following rewards!

RM100 & above
- Set of limited edition postcards

RM200 & above
- Borneo Bengkel T- Shirt
- Set of limited edition postcards

RM500 & above
- Limited edition art print
- Borneo Bengkel T- Shirt
- Set of limited edition postcards

RM1000 & above

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Pangrok Sulap
Pangrok Sulap is a collective of artists, musicians and social activists with a mission to empower rural communities and the marginalised through art. Founded in 2010, woodcut prints are the collective’s main tool in spreading social messages. Pangrok Sulap’s work tells the narrative of indigenous communities of Borneo as well as endangered ways of life, forests, and flora and fauna. "Pangrok" is the local pronunciation of "punk rock" and “ Sulap” is the name of a hut or a resting place usually used by farmers in Sabah. The collective are strong advocates for the DIY concept hence the slogan 'Jangan Beli, Bikin Sendiri' (Don't Buy, Do-it-yourself).

Sonia Luhong
A graphic designer by profession, Sonia Luhong Wan also specialises in the art of pyrography, whereby designs are burnt onto wood using the common soldering iron. Her subjects touch heavily
on themes of natural conservation and cultural identity – a reflection of her strong belief that art is not merely a form of creative self-expression, but also a powerful medium for education and social
awareness.

Catriona Maddocks
Catriona is a socially-engaged visual artist from the United Kingdom, who has lived in Sarawak for nearly a decade. The co-founder of Catama Borneo, a design house working with rural communities
to preserve and innovate traditional craft practices, she is fascinated by oral histories, indigenous patterns and motifs, natural materials and craftsmanship. Her work explores folklore and fables, primordial beasts and the repetition of stories through different cultures. Her most recent series juxtaposes traditional British folklore with the mythical creatures of Iban fables and questions how narratives define people and place, and weave together landscape, heritage and identity.

About Borneo Bengkel
Borneo Bengkel is a creative platform that explores issues of Bornean identity and culture through the eyes of craft makers, musicians, social activists, academicians and performers. Curated by Catama Borneo and HAUS KCH, it has over 40 collaborators from Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan.

Date: 4th May 2018
Time: 6pm
Venue HAUS KCH

Azmyl Yunor
The only Malaysian underground music artist to have a musical theatre staged about his journey as a troubadour (2013's "Something I Wrote" directed by Mark Teh), Azmyl Yunor has dabbled in folk rock, punk, free-form instrumentals and experimental noise rock for the past two decades. Although widely known as a singer-songwriter, he is also the founding member of several seminal underground bands. Informed by the DIY punk ethos & philosophy, he has been releasing recordings independently since 1997 and has also published writings on music subcultures, moral panics & cultural politics. His most recent release, 2017's "ampang park EP", is a paean to memory, places, and modernity. While born & bred in the Klang Valley in the peninsula, he also has a Sarawakian connection that many do not know of.

Bayangan
"Started in 2016, Bayangan is the moniker used by Malaysian singer songwriter and neo-folk artist, Fikri Fadzil. Bayangan’s music touches on subject matters of living in contemporary urban Malaysia, from personal relationships to societal issues. Fikri is also the founder of Malaysian based music and events company, The Wknd Sessions, that focuses on promoting Malaysian and Southeast Asian alternative music and culture. ‘Bersendirian Berhad’ will be his debut release, containing 9 tracks of original compositions."

In partnership with the US Embassy, Momentum KCH presents a 2-hour talk by a Senior Scientist from The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i.

The Skinny
+ Friday Night, 10th November 2017
+ 7pm - 9pm
+ Timbre, HAUS KCH
+ Light FnB on Sale

Your Speaker
Dr. Samuel M. ‘Ohukani‘ōhi‘a Gon, III is a Senior Scientist and Cultural Advisor for The Nature Conservancy of Hawai‘i. He holds more than 30 years of experience in conducting biological inventories and research, field ecology, entomology, arachnology, ethnology, natural community classification, ecological modeling and biological database management.

Topic Abstract
One of the challenges of conservation is demonstrating its relevance to people. Without a constituency supporting conservation, it cannot achieve its goals.

Hawaiian culture is closely tied to the natural world, and examining those cultural ties offers lessons and models that can be applied in Malaysia and elsewhere in the world. Both practical and intangible elements of culture (e.g, spiritual and intellectual) can be used to forge strong connections between people and their regional biocultural diversity. Examples from Hawaiian plants and animals illustrate these connections.

Location : HAUS KCH

Hosted by :

  • HAUS KCH

  • Intrtxt

HAUS KCH will be hosting INTRTXT's very first Public Debate on the 26th of April.

With finite resources, comes hard decisions. Acknowledging this, should we thin out our resources and provide with the bare minimum for everyone throughout the state? Or instead, should we focus on building up urban areas in order to have the best facilities and to create well to do business zones in the hopes that many would move there and create urban sprawls?

If you have an opinion on this come over and watch our first ever public debate and vote!

Motion: This house would focus on developing urban areas instead of rural areas in Sarawak

Debaters:

Proposition Team: Joshua Paren, Galvin Lee and Ian Dylan Chai

Opposition Team: Jonathan Dason, Chelsea Michael and Mohd Aekram
